The Odds of Finding Life and Love
You guys ready for the next episode of It’s Okay To Be Smart? This is a fun one, with a little Valentine’s Day theme.
It’s about what the search for extraterrestrial life in our galaxy can teach us about our odds of finding that special someone. Starting with the Fermi Paradox and the Drake Equation, we’ll explore the odds of finding a human to love that meets your criteria. There’s a special cosmic love story involving a couple named Carl and Ann that I think you guys will like too :)
If you’d like to learn more about the science behind the numbers that went into calculating the odds of alien life for this video, check this doc: http://dft.ba/-4bBW

How
Did the rose
Ever Open his Heart
And give to this world
All its
Beauty?
It felt the encouragement of light
Against its
Being,
Otherwise,
We all Remain
Too
Frightened.
The Many Wines
by Jalaluddin Rumi
God has given us a dark wine so potent that,
drinking it, we leave the two worlds.
God has put into the form of hashish a power
to seize the taster from self consciousness.
God has made sleep so
that it erases all thought.
God made Majnun love Laila so much that
just her dog would cause confusion in him.
There are thousands of wines
that can take over our minds.
Don’t think all ecstasies
are the same!
Jesus was lost in his love for God.
His donkey was drunk with barley.
Drink from the prescence of saints,
not from those other jars.
Every object, every being,
is a jar full of delight.
Be a connoiseur,
and taste with caution.
Any wine will get you high,
judge like a king, and choose the purest.
the ones unadulterated with fear,
or some urgency about “what’s needed.”
